Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it – Roald Dahl

We have been celebrating our traditional Book Week all week for International Book Day, which will take place on Sunday 23rd April.

This is a wonderful week full of great activities organized by the Department of Lengua, that aims to promote the healthy habit of reading in English and Spanish.

YAGOSCHOOL- fixing a book

In Infant they organize a beautiful activity that we call ‘Book Hospital’: we send the books from the classroom library home to try to repair them with much care and thus learn the importance of care and respect for books. In addition the children have brought their favourite book each day and have been able to share it with their classmates, doing a joint reading in the classroom.

In Primary, we began the week rewarding the best readers of each class with a tour of the best and oldest book stores in Seville.

On Wednesday, April 19th, we were fortunate to have a fascinating visit. The famous writer Pepe Maestro, author of novels such as Chismorreo, La Biomaestra, or Pluma de cuervo blanco, all books read by our pupils in P2, P4 and P6, chatted with our children and signed their books.

On Thursday, the P6 children went to tell their own stories to Infant classes. These stories are the result of the Young Writers project, which we often work on in Lengua classes. The children write beautiful stories, which they read and dramatised for the little ones of the school.

But the star activity of this year was undoubtedly the activity called “Digital Books“. The outside walls of the school have been decorated with photographs of all Primary pupils carrying a book with QR codes. Parents used the readers of their phones or tablets to discover the beautiful surprise that the codes revealed: their children reading fragments of books. Great plan!

In Secondary we organized the First Literary Contest and it was dedicated to the British writer Roald Dahl. Over the last few weeks Secondary 2 pupils have been working on writing short stories inspired by the work of world-famous novelist Roald Dahl, to put on each pupil’s personal blog, while Secondary 1 recorded audio-visual short films in groups.

Like every year, we ended the week celebrating the III Solidarity Book Fair together. The children brought books from home at the beginning of the week and on Friday they went on sale at the symbolic price of one euro. The proceeds go to The Yago Foundation.

Happy book day!
