Languages at Yago School

«Knowledge of languages is the door to wisdom.»
– Roger Bacon –

Our school is firmly committed to language teaching and to offering the corresponding official accreditation. This is a basic pillar for the international education we promote.

There are many reasons to enroll at Yago School, but among the most important to our parents is our international character and multilingual teaching. We give absolute priority to English, with 70% of the day taught in English, 30% in Spanish, and curricular Chinese as a second language from Nursery to Primary 6. Students have the option of taking Chinese or French starting in Secondary, rounding off our offer of the four most used languages in the world.

Knowing and mastering these languages will improve our students’ employment options, as they will be completely prepared to work in a globalized market.

Immersive English

Bilingualism is the main characteristic of our curriculum. Yago School’s educational project has a wide range of well-organized contents and activities, with English as the protagonist in the majority.

Every year, we put more and more confidence into this language starting in Nursery 0 up to Secondary in order to lend to our students’ bilingualism through immersion in this second language.

“70% of the daily classes are conducted entirely in English, with the exception of Mathematics and Spanish Language”

Mr. Davis English teacher

In addition, Yago School is characterized as a school with an international character where English is the main language used in hallways, recess, gardens, dining room, and assemblies. In addition, our school offers curricular subjects to promote debate, public speaking, writing workshops, and essays on different topics in order to develop oral and written communication in English. This makes students confident enough to use English spontaneously and naturally.

All this is backed up by student success at the highest levels of the Cambridge University certificates, which represent an added value of competitiveness before starting university studies.

In order to facilitate language practice and to acquire better command, we offer our students exchange and study abroad programs. In Primary, students can opt to go to Riddlesworth Hall School, a school with very similar principles to ours located in the south of England. In Secondary, we combine study abroad and exchange programs with different durations in countries like Ireland, the USA, and Canada.  The main objective is for Yago School students to have the opportunity to practice and reinforce the language abroad while they mature, broaden their vision of the changing world, and gain in competitiveness for their personal and professional futures.

Mandarin Chinese: a safe bet

Yago School introduces Chinese from the age of two and continues in Primary and Secondary in line with the objective that students finish their Baccalaureate studies communicating fluently in Spanish, English, and with a communicative level of Mandarin.

China is a great economic power with an immense population meaning that being able to communicate in Mandarin is increasingly valued in the business world, and particularly in education. Now that the University Entrance Exams (PAU) have been eliminated, it will be the Universities themselves that will establish their own entrance requirements and, as in the most prestigious international universities, the provision of official certificates in Chinese as a third language will open the doors for many of our students.

In our country, some 5,000 people study Chinese according to data from the Chinese Embassy in Spain, with Mandarin being the most widely spoken language in the world and the one most studied by foreigners.

“We are the only school in Western Andalusia authorized by the Confucius Institute as an examination center for the YCT and HSK Chinese exams”

Ms. Ji Zhiping, Chinese teacher

New students joining Yago School starting in Primary 2 will have to take Chinese support until they reach the level of the rest of their classmates.

At the teacher’s discretion, students may take the Confucius Institute’s official YCT and HSK certificates.

French: a classic choice

Starting in Secondary, students can choose to continue studying Chinese or opt for French.

Until the 20th century, French was the language of diplomacy, and today it continues to play an important role in organizations such as the UN, the EU, and the IMF.

“They not only acquire knowledge of the French language, but also apply this knowledge to real situations and prepare for the official external DELF-DALF exams of the Alliance Française.

Ms. Uber french teacher

It is in our interest that students finish their studies at Yago School with sufficient communicative ability in a third language.

French is a language that shares roots with Spanish and is therefore easier for our students to grasp more quickly. In addition, there are more than 300 million French speakers in the world, including countries such as France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, Haiti, and many countries in Africa.

Learning French changes our students’ perception of the world, as they develop an open and critical mentality, and a window to knowledge of other cultures, ideas and lifestyles.

The incorporation of French, as an option instead of Chinese from Secondary onwards, allows us to achieve the objective of fluent communication in a third language, which is certified with the DELF-DALF certificates of the Alliance Française.

What are the benefits of studying languages at our school?

Learn languages abroad with Yago School

An important part of our commitment to our students is that everyone has the opportunity to access an international bilingual education. It is highly recommended that students extend their complete Yago School education with studies abroad.

The advantage of learning a language in the place of origin is the enriching personal experience that living away from home in another country brings to the student. Summer programs and terms abroad constitute one of the most enriching experiences in the most formative stage of your children.

For this experience to be a guaranteed successm, we have reached an agreement with renowned study abroad company SHEFFIELD, an institution specialized in the organization of language programs abroad, to jointly make a selection of courses with programs that are a great choice for our students due to their recognition and good work over the years.

Official Certifications

English Certification

The learning of the English language, a fundamental pillar in the formation of our students, is completed with student preparation for the acquisition of different official certificates.

University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations

Every year, more than three million people take one of the Cambridge ESOL exams. These exams are known worldwide and the diplomas obtained are internationally recognized by all types of institutions as tangible proof of the level of knowledge of the language. Our students are required to take the exams of different levels in Primary 2, 3, 4, and 6, as well as in Secondary.

Chinese Certification

As a third language, we offer our students the advantage of learning Mandarin Chinese. Chinese teachers are native speakers and they bring us closer to Chinese culture every day. We know that it is the language of the future and how important it could be for students. We also prepare our students to obtain the different official qualifications.

Confucius Institute – Hanban

We are the only school in Western Andalusia recognized by the Confucius Institute as an Examination Center for the YCT and HSK exams, thus obtaining official language qualifications. Every year, we receive registrations from all kinds of students who come to our facilities to take the exams for these Chinese level exams.

French Certification

Students from Secondary onwards can choose to continue with Chinese as a third curricular language or start with French. As with English and Chinese, these teachers are native speakers and, in addition to teaching the language, they also teach culture of French-speaking countries.

French is still highly valued in international organizations of all kinds, including the European Union, the UN and the IMF.

At the discretion of the teaching staff, students take the official DELF-DALF diplomas of the Alliance Française each year. The DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française) and the DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) are two of the most popular French language exams in the world. The exam is designed to assess the ability to use French in a professional and personal environment. It is divided into four levels: A1, A2, B1 and B2.

Frequently Asked Questions

No mostrar
Do bilingual children end up mixing languages when they speak?

Bilingualism is the ability to communicate and think in two languages. Being bilingual requires a process of assimilating vocabulary, grammatical structures and ideas from different languages. Some parents think that learning two languages at the same time can confuse children or delay language, but this belief is wrong. Bilingual children mix words from the languages harmlessly until they learn to distinguish between the two languages. They do this temporarily and it disappears naturally as they grow older and develop both languages.

How many languages can my child learn?

As many as he/she wants. Children have very malleable brains and this allows them to learn many languages, especially from 0 to 5 years old. Listening and speaking several languages at the same time does not affect the child negatively, but on the contrary, it improves their verbal expression and communication skills. Therefore, Yago students will finish their studies bilingual in Spanish and English, and will have a great communicative capacity in Chinese and/or French.

Does learning two languages at the same time affect a child's development?

It does! Children who learn two or more languages at the same time stimulate their cognitive capacity and perform better in other subjects. Learning two languages at the same time helps them develop superior reading and writing skills, improves their social adaptability, affects their self-esteem and self-confidence, favors access to knowledge, and contributes to better mental health.
